WORLD COIN & PAPER MONEY BOOKS

A lot of information (and misinformation) can be found on internet, but much of the information about coins is best (or only) still be found in books.
There is an old saying in the coin  hobby, "buy the book before you buy the coin".  Related to it is another old saying "Knowledge is power".  Knowing what to look for in a coin can save you hundreds of dollars - and perhaps even make you some money.  There are a lot of collectors out there that "cherry pick" dealers because they read the book and  know what to look for.

We are pleased to offer you a number of older, specialized, out of print titles dealing titles dealing with subjects not easily found elsewhere.
Build yourself a reference library!  You never knows when you will find that weird coin or token that needs to be researched.

The books are all unused unless otherwise indicated , but the covers of some may be a bit "shopworn" from being schlepped about in boxes for the past 20 to 50 years

WORLD COINS:

Revised & Edited by Arthur L. Friedberg.  Updated 2023 edition of the classic "Brown Book" of World Coins.  Lists and pictures most world coins from 1850 to 1964 by type with prices in three grades. Rare dates and Proofs are also listed and priced.  It includes both KM and Y catalog numbers. Precious metal contents and fineness charts are included for each country. By Gregory Hale  A detailed study of the varieties, designs, production techniques, and factories that made these scarce and mysterious ceramic coins made by Japan in the closing days of World War II.  Contains a listing that includes many little-known varieties of this unusual coinage. OLD COINS OF CHINA by Holger Jorgensen
A small but complete identification guide book for Chinese cash coins from 600BC to 1912AD. Best book if you just want to identify Chinese cash coins by emperor and date without going into varieties. Features line drawings of coins with reign title and reign dates, but not much further information.   Reprint. 26 pages and plates. 5.5" x 8.5",  softcover. New

THE COINS OF THE GRAND MASTERS OF THE ORDER OF MALTA by Robert Morris
The original full title is “Coins of the Grand Masters of the Order of Malta or Knights Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem with a Chapter on the Money of the Crusades and an introduction, heraldic and historic notes”.  The book provides a history of the Order, its Grand Masters and its coins from its founding in Jerusalem during the Crusades until it was exiled by Napoleon in 1798.   New 70 + xvi pages + 6 plates, soft cover.

Hard Bound.   Published by American Vecturist Association. This is the standard reference on world transportation tokens.  Includes detailed descriptions, price and rarity guides.

CATALOGUE OF WORLD FERRY, SHIP AND CANAL TRANSPORTATION TOKENS AND PASSES, by Kenneth E and Kirk S Smith  First (and only) edition, 1981, 202 pages, hardbound. Published by American Vecturist Association  Extensive listing including tokens of Australia, Canada, France, Germany,United Kingdom, United States and many other countries. Many illustrations and valuations (low by today's standards, but it is a good rarity guide)

CATALOGUE OF WORLD HORSECAR, HORSEOMNIBUS, STREETCAR, AND BUS TRANSPORTATION TOKENS, EXCEPT NORTH AMERICA,  by Kenneth E and Kirk S Smith  First (and only) edition,, 1990, 183 pages, hardbound, Published by American Vecturist Association   Extensive listing of horse related transportation tokens.  Covers over 60 nations outside of North America. Includes Illustrations, index by inscriptions and valuations. Though valuations are out of date they serve as a good rarity guide.


THE ATWOOD-COFFEE CATALOGUE OF UNITED STATES AND CANADIAN TRANSPORTATION TOKENS, 6th ed. By John M Coffee and Harold V. Ford. Published by American Vecturist Association. (2007) 934 pages, hardbound, Listing by state, territory and province, includes prices and extensive token identifier.  The Standard Reference for U.S. Transportation tokens.   



TOKENS & MEDALS, A GUIDE TO THE IDENTIFICATION AND VALUES OF UNITED STATES EXONUMIA, by Stephen E Alpert & Lawrence E. Elman, 1st. Edition, 1992, 300p. softcover.  Good general reference on United States tokens and medals.  Describes and illustrates into various types and their relitive rariety, but it is not detailed listing.





MEDALLIC PORTRAITS OF THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON by Christopher Eimer. (1994)   Extensively illustrated with detailed descriptions and historical notes about the many medals and tokens issued depicting the hero of the Napoleonic wars. The book lists some 274 pieces and includes comprehensive indexes of inscriptions and legends; medallists and publishers; and general subject-matter. Even if you don't have a Duke of Wellington medal, you will enjoy the history and politics discussed  in book.  Softbound, 9.8 x 7.9" (quarto). 138 pages, softcover. TOKENS OF THE COUNTRIES OF FORMER YUGOSLAVIA, by Ranko Mandic
 This book is a comprehensive 375 page softcover guide covers the tokens and other exonumia issued in Bosnia and Herzgovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia and Yugoslavia. It also includes an appendix of fantasy Euro coins issued in the name of the republics of the former Yugoslavia.  The book is a complete revision of the author’s 2001 reference “Tokens of the Yugoslav Lands”. Over 3,000 pieces are listed, including many of the items that have not been previously cataloged.  The book is in English, Slovenia, Croatian and Serbian with prices in Euros.  The book contains over a thousand color pictures of tokens as well as the people and places associated with those tokens. Additional photos of exonumia would be useful.  Tokens are arranged by country and city.  An extensive index aids in the identification of tokens. Included are trade tokens, telephone tokens, transportation tokens, amusment tokens and medalic tokens.
