NEW COINS FROM VENEZUELA
Due
to severe inflation brought on by excessive government spending,
Venezuela recently re-valued their currency on January 1, 2008. 1
new Bolivar fuerte (strong) is equivalent to 1000 of the old
Bolivars. Along with this revaluation came a new set of
coins. The new coins issued were the 1, 5, 10, 12 1/2, 25 and 50
Centavos and a bi-metallic 1 Bolivar, all dated 2007. The national arms
is on the obverse of each coin. The 1 Bolivar pictures national hero
Simon Bolivar on the reverse, who helped liberate Latin America from
Spanish rule in the early 19th Century. The other denominations
show the denomination in large numerals on the reverse. The 12
1/2 Centavos (1/8 Bolivar) is an unusual denomination that harkens back
to the 19th century when Spanish Pieces-of-Eight circulated in the
region. Venezuela last issued the denomination in 1958.
Despite the name “fuerte” the currency trades on the black market at
less than half of the official exchange rate.

Denmark released two new coins dated 2007. The 10 Kroner
commemorated International Polar Year and pictures a standing polar

scientific program that includes hundreds of projects involving
thousands of researchers. The 20 Kroner portrays the research
ship Vaeddern (The Ram) which is engaged a year-long scientific
circumnavigation of the globe. Both coins are aluminum-bronze and
picture Queen Margrethe II on the obverse. They are some of the
only scientific projects to be honored with circulating commemorative
coins.

and joined the Rhine Confederation. In 1815 it joined the German

Cabinda is a former
Portuguese colony on the west coast of Africa. Though it declared
independence in August 1975, it has been continously occupied by
Angola, probably due to its rich petroleum resources. In recent
years a series of coins has been issued by the Bank of Cabinda. The
issues are quite interesting and popular, as they picture native
wildlife and include odd-shaped and bi-metallic issues. It is
unclear who authorized the coins. The Cabinda government in
London says they did not authorize the issue and of course the coins do
not circulate in Cabinda as the area is still controlled by
Angola. In 2006 the Bank of Cabinda issued a huge 50mm
bi-metallic 10 Escudo coin that commemorates the five years of Cabinda
coin issues. One side of the coin pictures all 12 coin issues of
the Bank of Cabinda. The other side pictures a swordfish and the Bank's
arms. It is an impressive and attractive coin.
